Grief and Loss

Everyone experiences grief at various points in their lives. We suffer many types of losses: death, divorce, and separation are the ones that come to mind first for most people. However, there are other losses as well – loss of home, possessions, starting school, leaving school, leaving home, retirement, loss of abilities or skills, are just a few examples.

Grief is a normal reaction to loss, it is an experience everyone has and we encounter it throughout our lives. The stages of grief have been studied by many and most accepted are the following 5 stages:

Denial and isolation
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance

Some losses are more difficult to manage than others, because they are harder to accept or perhaps are more abrupt or unexpected and people sometimes get stuck. You may notice changes in your physical health and well being, you may experience changes in your cognitive skills and abilities, and you may become more emotionally overwhelmed. When this happens it is hard to move on by yourself and you will likely benefit from extra support. At Austin Psychology we have many years of experience working with people who have suffered all types of losses at all stages of life.

Caring and effective therapy.
